10 Killed 39 Wounded Chicago
In One Weekend, March 2012
At least 10
people were killed, including a 6-year-old girl, in shootings over the weekend
in Chicago.
The slain were
among at least 49 people wounded in shootings from 5 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday,
according to information compiled by the Chicago Tribune.
Two teenagers
appeared in bond court today in the slaying of Aliyah Shell, as she sat with
her mother, sister and a male about 3:30 p.m. Saturday on the front porch of
her home in the 3100 block of South Springfield Avenue. Aliyah was killed when
a pickup truck pulled up in front of the house and someone fired multiple shots
out of the window, hitting her, according to Chicago Police Department News
Affairs.
Prosecutors say
Luis Hernandez, 16, fired several shots while Juan Barraza, 18, slowed the
pickup truck to a stop in front of the home . Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil
denied bail for Hernandez and set a $2 million bond for Barraza.
Both teens are said to be affiliated
with the Latin Kings street gang, police said.
Of the shootings
over the weekend, 35 happened between 9:30 p.m. Friday and 4:20 a.m. Sunday,
most on the South and Southwest sides. In addition to Aliyah Shell, nine
people, most of them men in the 20s and 30s, died following shootings from
Friday evening through Monday morning:
• A 19-year-old man shot Friday night in West Rogers Park
died Sunday afternoon, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Anthony Scott, of the 9100 block of South Perry Avenue, was declared dead at
3:52 p.m. at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, according to the medical
examiner's office.
The man
identified as Scott was shot about 9:45 p.m. in the 6300 block of North Oakley
Avenue in the West Rogers Park neighborhood, Greer said. Someone called Scott
over to his vehicle and opened fire as he approached, hitting him in the head,
according to police.
• Joel Sanroman, 42, was shot near his home in the 5200
block of South Troy Street in Gage Park about 12:15 a.m. Saturday. He was a
passenger in a car and after he was shot, the driver drove to 59th and
Sacramento Avenue and alerted police, police said.
Sanroman was
taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospitalof Cook Countyand was declared dead at
1:02 a.m. Saturday, a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office
said.
Although the
slaying appeared gang-related, the victim does not have any serious arrests and
is not believed to have been the target of the shooting, police said.
• Police were questioning two suspects after Deering
District officers were able to chase down the occupants of a car who fired on
three people, killing one and wounding two others about 1:50 a.m. Saturday in
the 5300 block of South Loomis Boulevard in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.
The slain man was
identified as Equilla Coleman, 24, of 325 166th St. in Calumet City. He was
declared dead at 3:10 a.m. at Mount Sinai, according to the Cook County medical
examiner's office.
• Bert Lindsey, 36, of the 7600 block of South Winchester
Avenue, was killed on the 7500 block of South Wolcott Avenue in the Gresham
neighborhood about 1:20 a.m. Saturday, police said. He was at a party on the
block, in a back yard, when someone drove by and opened fire, police said.
Police said Lindsey didn't have a criminal history. He was pronounced dead at
Advocate Christ Medical Center about 2:15 a.m., a spokeswoman for the Cook
County medical examiner's office said.
• Adrian Cruz, 24, was shot multiple times about 7:04
p.m. Saturday in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the same block as his home,
police said.
Cruz was standing
on the street in the 5900 Block of South Fairfield Avenue when a vehicle pulled
up and one of the people inside stepped out, pulled a weapon and started
shooting at him, the man told police. He was taken to Stroger Hospital where he
later died.
• Jeremy Anthony, 24, was found dead in a car outside the
University of Chicago Medical Center about 10:20 p.m. Saturday, according to
authorities. He's believed to have been shot in the back in the 6300 block of
South Ellis Avenue in the Woodlawn neighborhood and driven to the hospital,
police said. He lived about a block south from where he was shot.
Someone standing
in the street shot him while he was sitting on the passenger side of the car's
backseat and the driver of the car brought him to the hospital, police said.
• Vincent Fitts, of the 4100 block of West Cermak Road,
was killed in the East Chatham neighborhood Saturday evening.
Fitts was shot in
the head and was dead on the scene about 7:52 p.m. Saturday in the 800 block of
East 79th Street at Cottage Grove Avenue, authorities said.
• Two people were being questioned after a man was found
shot to death in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood late Sunday, police said.
Officers were
called to the 1300 block of North Pulaski Road at 10:50 p.m. Sunday and found
George Marrero, 27, dead on the scene with a gunshot wound to the head,
according to Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman.
Marrero, of the
1400 block of North Harding Avenue, had been standing on the sidewalk when a
vehicle drove by and someone inside fired shots, hitting him several times,
according to police.
Area North
detectives are interviewing two people, police said. A gun was found and the
shooting is considered gang-related, police said.
• Andre Pierce, 34, was fatally shot early Monday in the
Lawndale neighborhood, authorities said.
Police said
Pierce was shot several times in the chest at 1:35 a.m. outside his home in the
2500 block of West Lexington Street.
He was pronounced
dead at 6:08 a.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County medical
examiner's office.
