Campaign finance reform
Campaign finance is a know detriment to our
system of government, so much so that congress has tried in the past to reform
it and limit its influence.
A limitation
on donations is a good first step but leaves in place a second leg of campaign
finance problems. Under present law Legislators get to claim as their own money
the accumulated unused wealth in their campaign finance fund. This sometimes amounts
to tens of millions of dollars that make these Legislators personally wealthy
in retirement. These same Legislators get a generous retirement from the
government.
Allowing these Legislators to take this campaign
finance and transform it into personal wealth is an obvious avenue for undue influence
in our government.
The
best use of this money donated to government officials is to be put into a
public finance fund. It can be given to candidates for public office that
refuses private donations for campaigns.
